BIE Digital Disruption Event with Mark Spelman – World Economic Forum

by Kate Scammell-Anderson on 30 Sep 2016

Mark_Spelmen_World_Economic_Forum.jpgOver the last few years we have seen a significant shift in organisations’ strategy due to rapid development in digital technology and have supported them to deliver their goals. For many of us, we don’t know what we don’t know and have no idea what the future holds for us.

A recent BIE survey of 150 business leaders, concluded that 58% found the speed and scale of change required to remain competitive overwhelming, whilst just 9% think business leaders are completely equipped to lead business growth in this environment.

BIE were privileged today to be joined by a room full of senior leaders and to have Mark Spelman, Digital and Internet Advisor for the World Economic Forum, shed some light on this shadowy future.

Mark is responsible for the WEF’s future of the internet initiatives and has more than 20 years of experience working for Accenture in senior management and business strategy positions. In the last 10 years he had worked with the boards of major corporations on creating strategic direction and large scale transformational change programmes.

Mark delivered a hugely insightful, energetic and enlightening talk, highlighting the macro, micro and personal implications of digital disruption. He introduced the trend across industries from scale and consolidation to speed and customization, combined with a reliance on historic data to real time data.

He discussed the pressure for real time decision making, requiring the ability to capture, analyse and act on high volumes of data.  Mark explained how this is impacting customer experience and our workforce, which is driving new types of business models.  He concluded that collaboration, horizontal partnerships and emotional intelligence are key for boards to be successful now and in the future.

BIE will be releasing a follow-up ebook that will cover more information on digital disruption, research on how this is impacting business leaders, and thought leaders’ views on the future for the corporate world. Register here for your copy.
