In Summary

Clancy is one of the largest privately-owned construction firms in the UK, founded in Wembley in 1958 by Michael Clancy as M.J. Clancy & Sons Limited. Today the firm trades as The Clancy Group Ltd (Clancy).

With over sixty years’ experience and a workforce of over 2200, Clancy operates across multiple sectors including Civil Engineering, Energy, Renewables and Water.

Clancy has a turnover in excess of £250m and, as one of the UK’s largest privately-owned construction firms, the business has a forward order book of £1.2bn. This spans the utilities, infrastructure, plant hire and traffic management sectors.

Challenge

Following a management restructure at the end of 2018, Clancy was looking to expand their essential infrastructure across all sectors. They were seeking to deliver better performance by maximising investment through innovation, driving greater productivity and shaping more resilient networks.

The Board was, therefore, looking to roll out an 18-month strategy plan to shape the future of the company. While maintaining the family-feel of the business, they wanted to deliver a robust long-term structure and governance. Integral to this was Clancy’s mission to improve the lives of the company’s employees, clients and their customers, suppliers, and contractors.

As part of the ongoing transformation and in recognition of its commitment to people and culture, the business was seeking to hire its first Exec-level HR Director, as well as a new IT Director and Supply Chain Director, presenting the successful individuals with an opportunity to drive tangible change in a commercially effective, future-focused and innovative business.

Remit

Clancy Group Plc reached out to BIE to source talent for all three roles.

Specifically, they were looking for a Human Resources Director with the experience and expertise to operate as a trusted advisor and coach to the CEO and Executive team. Someone who could lead and oversee all people interventions across the business and ensure “best in class” HR service delivery to employees.

A Exec level IT Director who would be able to create and deliver a 3-year IT roadmap that would support and enable the business to transform and evolve. A pragmatic and commercially astute technology leader, with the experience to manage and implement new core business systems, associated infrastructure, and applications that the company required to deliver its business objectives and maintain high levels of customer service. As well as ensuring all IT and business systems met the current and anticipated future needs of the business.

Another area of focus was Supply Chain where the appointment of a new Director with the aim of fully commercialising operations and upgrade all procurement procedures.

Solution

BIE partnered with Clancy to source, attract and ultimately secure quality candidates for all three roles during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite challenges around timeframes and external economic factors, BIE were able to retain engagement with all candidates and worked hard to ensure Clancy was able to hire the key talent they sought. A strong focus on culture fit along with careful calibration against the key competencies and experience required, resulted in a positive outcome for the client and candidates alike.
